Should I see my GP before booking with a chiropractor or osteopath?

For many muscle, joint and back problems, the answer is not necessarily.

You can usually contact a chiropractor or osteopath directly without seeing your GP first. Your first appointment gives us the opportunity to understand what’s been happening, assess you properly and decide whether chiropractic or osteopathic care is appropriate for you.

Do I need a GP referral?

You don’t usually need a GP referral to see a chiropractor or osteopath.

Chiropractic and osteopathy are regulated healthcare professions in the UK. Practitioners undertake degree-level clinical training before becoming registered with their respective regulatory bodies: the General Chiropractic Council (GCC) for chiropractors and the General Osteopathic Council (GOsC) for osteopaths.

Their training includes assessing patients and recognising when symptoms may need further medical investigation or input from another healthcare professional. Osteopathic degree programmes, for example, include subjects such as anatomy, physiology, pathology, pharmacology and biomechanics alongside substantial clinical training.

This means your first appointment isn’t simply about treatment. It’s an opportunity for us to take a detailed history, examine you and decide whether you’re in the right place.

What happens at your first appointment?

We’ll begin by asking about your symptoms, including when they started, how they’re affecting your everyday life, your medical history and any previous treatment or investigations.

We’ll then carry out an examination relevant to your symptoms. This may include looking at your movement, joints, muscles and neurological function.

Once we’ve completed the assessment, we’ll explain our findings, answer any questions you have and discuss the options with you.

What if I need to see my GP?

Sometimes symptoms need further medical assessment rather than, or before, chiropractic or osteopathic treatment.

If we identify something that may require further investigation, imaging or input from another healthcare professional, we’ll explain why and help point you in the appropriate direction.

This may involve advising you to contact your GP, seek more urgent medical care or consult another healthcare professional. Where appropriate, and with your consent, we can also write to or liaise with your GP.

If we don’t think chiropractic or osteopathic care is appropriate for you, we’ll tell you.

When should I contact my GP first?

There are circumstances where speaking to your GP or another healthcare service first may be more appropriate. For example, if you are generally unwell alongside your pain, have unexplained symptoms that concern you, have experienced a significant injury, or are already undergoing medical investigation for the same problem.

Some symptoms require more urgent medical assessment. These can include sudden loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness around the groin or saddle area, rapidly worsening weakness, severe chest pain or symptoms following a serious accident.

If you’re concerned that your symptoms could be a medical emergency, seek urgent medical attention rather than waiting for a routine chiropractic or osteopathy appointment.

What if I’m simply not sure where to start?

That’s absolutely fine. You don’t need to work out which practitioner or service you need before contacting us.

Our team can answer your initial questions and help you decide on the most appropriate next step. If you do book an appointment, your chiropractor or osteopath will assess you before recommending whether treatment is appropriate.
